For any kind of hypnosis to be successful you need to be in a total state of relaxation. In hypnosis this is called the alpha state of consciousness. You are in the alpha state of hypnosis at the beginning of a hypnosis session.

The alpha state is similar to the state one normally is just before drifting off to sleep i.e. a state of total comfort and relaxation. At the same time this state is also similar to the state of consciousness that you are in when you are doing your normal daily chores or reading a book.

Many people think that when a person is under hypnosis he or she is not aware of what is happening in their immediate surroundings. This is not true. At no time in hypnosis is one unaware of what is happening.

The beta level of consciousness is when a person is fully awake and focused on their surroundings.

With Self-hypnosis, you can create powerful changes in your life. Self-hypnosis involves 5 steps, which are mentioned in order below.

1. Induction: This is the first step in hypnosis when the person to be hypnotized is brought to a relaxed state.

2. Deepening of relaxation: Here the level of relaxation is deepened. You may still be in an awakened state or a level of relaxation bordering on sleep.

3. Suggestions: In the third stage, behavioral changes are suggested using scripts or dialogue. The suggestions made in this stage are powerful and lasting. What actually happens is, in this stage of hypnosis your mind is totally relaxed and thus it accepts all the positive suggestions that are made to it.

4. Amnesia stage: This stage is necessary to prevent the hypnotized person from over analyzing the suggestions made in the third stage. This stage is also called the amnesia stage.

5. Awakening stage or the stage of full awareness: The last stage involves becoming fully awake or going into deeper sleep. This is the last stage of hypnosis. All the suggestions that are made in the hypnotic state are with you even after you have come out of hypnosis.
